Common Questions

A few things clients often ask before their first consultation.

How does the initial consultation work?
Initial consultations are conducted at our standard hourly rate. It's an opportunity for us to understand your situation and for you to evaluate whether we're the right fit, with no pressure and no obligation to retain our services afterward.
How much does a divorce cost in Massachusetts?
The cost depends significantly on the process chosen. A collaborative or uncontested divorce is typically far less expensive than a contested court proceeding. During your consultation, we will discuss the options honestly, including what each path typically costs, so you can make an informed decision before committing to anything.
Do I need a trust or just a will?
It depends on your assets, your family situation, and your goals. A will is simpler and less expensive to prepare, but it passes through probate: a public, court-supervised process that takes time. A revocable living trust avoids probate entirely, keeps your affairs private, and takes effect immediately if you become incapacitated. Many clients benefit from having both. We will walk you through the comparison clearly at your consultation.
How long does a guardianship petition take in Massachusetts?
A standard guardianship through Essex and Middlesex County Probate and Family Courts typically takes 4–8 weeks from filing to hearing, depending on court scheduling and whether the matter is contested. In urgent situations, we can file for emergency temporary guardianship, which can be granted much faster, sometimes within days, to protect a vulnerable individual immediately.
Do you offer virtual consultations?
Yes. We offer consultations by video (Zoom) and phone for clients who prefer not to come in. In-person meetings are available at our Topsfield office at 458 Boston Street (Route 1). Select your preference when scheduling and we will send the appropriate invite.
