Cryptocurrency is the easiest significant asset to move quietly and the hardest for a spouse to stumble across by accident. This is the checklist we work through when deciding whether a case needs forensic tracing.

Why this checklist looks different from most. Attorney Clinton Dalton spent years with the United States Department of Defense tracing concealed funds. The signals below are the ones that actually matter in an asset trace, in the order a forensic examiner would look for them. Tax filings come first, because they are the one place a spouse has already made a statement under penalty of perjury.

Not sure where to start? If you have broader concerns beyond cryptocurrency, begin with our Hidden Asset Risk Assessment, which covers business ownership, offshore accounts, lifestyle discrepancies and behavioral signals. This page is the deeper dive for the cryptocurrency question specifically.

A word about the printout. If you print this, think about where it will sit. A checklist about a spouse's finances left in a shared house can create the conflict you were trying to avoid. Saving it as a PDF to a personal device or emailing it to an account only you can read is usually safer than paper.

Tracing concealed assets is a specific skill, not a general one. It is the work Attorney Dalton did before he did this.
